A Song of Praise

I was reading my Bible earlier, preparing for a speaking event that’s coming up.  I want to share with you what Jesus spoke to me as I read His word.

In my distress I called to the Lord: I cried to my God for help.  From His temple He heard my voice; my cry came before Him, into His ears. Psalm 18:6

Friends, this song David penned is amazing, wonderful words of life.  Read that verse again!  I’m in awe that the God who created the stars, who numbered the sand in the sea, who lives in the Heavens, hears my cry for help.

Doesn’t that just stop you in your tracks?  God comes to you and I when we call on His name.  Not just sometimes, but all the time, every time!  He doesn’t have a limit and say, “I’m not coming, you’ve called on my name way too much!”  No my God runs to me every time I all His name.

My cry for help comes to His ears!  This is a verse of sheer victory!  There’s no other name we can call on that can run to our side, calm our storm, scoop us up in their arms of love, and bear our pain.  Only Jesus can do that for you and for me!

So while I was sitting here praising Him for who He is to me, I decided to share this with you.  I pray this verse encourages your heart this afternoon.

Take some time to sit at His feet, and worship Him today, simply for who He is to you.

He is my Lord and my God.  My King.  My Father.  My Redeemer.  My Protector.  My Defender.  My Rock…and so much more.

Have a great afternoon sitting at His feet.

John 4:39

This morning I drove up in the parking lot of my work and remembered I had failed to drop off a bag of trash I had in my back seat, so I drove over to the dumpster in the parking lot of my office.  When I got out of my car, over behind the dumpster sitting on a little bridge was an older man.  As I walked back to my car I heard Jesus whisper to me, “Give him some water.” The man’s clothes were worn and tattered, he sat staring down at the bridge.

I grabbed a few bottles of water I had with me, and went over and ask if he would like some water. To my dismay He replied, “No thank you.” I offered again, and again, he replied,” No thank you, I don’t need it.”

I drove away wondering why He didn’t accept my free gift.  Why he didn’t want the water?

Then I said to myself, “I’ve done my part, I had made the offer.”

As I went into my office and began to work, I couldn’t get this man off my mind.  I began to think, “I need to offer Him the gospel.”  I prayed for him but I felt I needed to offer Him the gospel, the living water.

I said to myself, “Finish what you started, you’re not done, offer Him everlasting water.”

I typed out several verses for Him.  Verses about how Christ cares for us.  A verse about hope.

Then I shared the gospel with him on this paper.  I let him know how easy it is to ask Jesus to live in your heart, and how He alone can change your life.

I went back to the bridge but he wasn’t there, so I taped my paper to the bridge for him. Now I will pray for another opportunity to speak to him face to face because I found out today, that little bridge is his home.

Then I began to think on all the people all over this town, this state, this country, this world who are waiting for us to offer them just a cup of water in Jesus’ name.  They need us to offer them LIVING WATER…

A sweet young friend of mine is leaving in a few months to head back to Kenya where God has shown her, this is the place He has for her to give a cup of water in His name

She has a heart for the young boys on the street there.  So rather than sit,  she is going to be the hands and feet of Jesus and offer them not only a home off the streets, but she will take every moment to share Jesus with them.

Then my mind shifted to my friends who gave up their home and life here to minister in China for 10 years. Oh how many opportunities God gave them to give a cup of water in His name…

They not only built a church from nothing, but they took in orphans, and made 2 of them permanent members of their family as they adopted them.  What a difference they have made for Christ for all eternity.

I read recently of a lady who gave monthly to two kids in another country.  She decided one day to go and see them, and God burdened her heart for people around the globe who need food and water while she was on that trip and saw the needs of so many.

She came back and started an organization where she helps people in America and all around the world, by simply asking others to skip something they can do without and give to the cause of another.  I love that!  She is giving a cup of cold water in Jesus’ name.

You and I who have accepted Christ as our Savior are His disciples.  It’s that easy!

How can you make a difference today for Christ?  Who can you give a cup of cold water to?

Sometimes we make the gospel so complicated, when it’s very simple.  By loving others, which may look like volunteering, going to another country to serve on a mission trip, or sharing a bottle of water, we are sharing Jesus.

Friends we must step out and begin to share the gospel with those we come in contact with.  People are all around us who need to know Jesus.  It’s why we are here on this earth.  He created us to serve Him, love Him, and share Him with the world.  water

Whether it’s in Africa, China, Haiti, or the USA we are all His disciples.  Isn’t that exciting?

How can you and I make a difference today, an eternal difference?

When Jesus stopped by the well in Samaria, he asked the Samaritan woman for a drink.  Rather than insisting she pour Him a drink, He began to tell her about living water.  He now had her attention.  She began inquiring as to what he meant.

He began to share with her, “Whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst again.”

In that one phrase, he took the conversation from everyday water to everlasting water.

She accepted His gift that day, and an entire town saw the change in her, and they wanted this living water.  An entire group of unbelievers found Jesus that day!  What a story of how Jesus changes everything.

Who does Jesus have in your path today? Perhaps you too can step out and offer them the life changing gift, the everlasting gift, the gift of life only Christ can bring them.

John 10:10 says “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

The only hope in this world is Jesus.  Let’s take every opportunity we have to share Him with this world who desperately need to hear of His love for them.

Let’s go and live Matthew 10:42 today.  It will change not only the lives of those that accept Christ as their Savior, but it will change us as we share His love more and more.  Sharing the love of Jesus puts a smile on my face, doesn’t it yours? Yes! Guess what? It will put a smile on theirs as well.  That’s what a changed life looks like, one huge smile.water2

Who will you give a cup of cold water to ?

See you back here soon.

Do you hear MY voice?

my-sheep-800x200Several months back I was sitting in front of a precious friend listening to her share her heart with me.  As she was speaking I heard God saying to me, “Tammy, this is what I have for you now, I want you to walk with her.”

When I left her that Sunday afternoon, I argued with God all the way home.  I mean He was asking me to do something that would really require a lot of time from me, and I just don’t have much time, not that kind of time.  Her storm was Alzheimer’s and I didn’t know much about the disease but I knew it was difficult, and could get messy.  I told God, “I can’t do this, it’s too much.”

For days he consumed my mind with this.  I would hear His voice in the middle of the night and the day saying, “Tammy, this is what I want for you to do right now.  Lay aside your ministry, and take time to walk this road with her.”

I was sitting on my floor doing my devotion a few mornings after this, when I opened a box where I keep things that make me smile.  I had not opened this box for some time.  When I opened it, right on the top was a card from this precious friend God was asking me to walk with.  As I read the card, tears came to my eyes, and I said, “Lord I will do as you have asked, as long as I know You are with me.”

I had a sweet peace as I went about my day.  I knew God had been pursing my heart and I had finally said Yes to my Lord.

For the next several months I began to visit her more, and try to help her as I could, without her knowing of course.  I had loved and known her for sometime, but now we were spending more time together.  I began to settle into what God had asked me to do and really enjoy our time together.  I would look forward to being with her.  She was always so full of joy when I arrived.

Sometimes we would spend hours just pouring through God’s Word.  She was a breath of fresh air to me.  I had been so busy going and doing, that it was nice to sit and relax and take in all she was showing me in His word and in the world.

Jesus said to them, “Come away with me. Let us go alone to a quiet place and rest for a while.”  Mark 6:31

I had just been in a season of ministry that was very fruitful.  I had so enjoyed the conferences I had , and the ones I had spoken at.  Honestly I didn’t realize it until that moment, but I was really tired from the past year.  I smiled as I thought about arguing with the King of Kings, who knows me so well…He knew I needed to rest, and He knew the perfect place to do that was with my sweet friend.

I was also learning sometimes ministry looks different than what we have in our minds.  As I gave more of myself to her and more of my time, I began to see God at work in my heart.  What had started out as me helping her, I was realizing was not all about her, but that God was using her to do a work in me.

When she and I would go to her one of her favorite places to eat, I would watch her go up to countless people and ask them, “Can I share a verse with you?” Every time they would say sure!  Then she would share, “This is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24.  Everyone she shared this verse with always had a smile on their face and thanked her for sharing.

She would then look at me and say, “You aren’t going to want to go anywhere with me are you?”  I would laugh and tell her I loved watching her, and I did.

God was using her to teach me to be more intentional with His gospel! I began to get so excited about our time together.  I couldn’t wait to see what God had for me through her each day we were together.  On top of that we loved to laugh together, and I realized God was allowing me precious time with her that I would never forget, precious memories that I would always have, and most importantly He showed me how valuable it was to give myself and my time to someone else and let Him use it.

Sing to God- worship God! Shout the news of His victory from sea to sea, Take the news of His glory to the lost, news of His wonders to one and all! Psalm 96:1-3

When I wasn’t with her, I began to use the things she was teaching me to share the love of God with those I was coming in contact with.  I began to see a difference in me.  I have always been very bold for Christ in church, and in conferences, but I was finding out that at restaurants, work, and other public places, I wasn’t so bold.  God was using my sweet friend to teach me to share His love with EVERYONE.

She would say, “You don’t have to push the gospel on them, just be gentle and kind, and share a verse, and move on knowing you’ve perhaps planted a seed that others will water.”

Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…Hebrews 10:24

This is what we were doing for one another.  God was teaching me that the most valuable thing I could give her was my time, and He was using her to teach me how to more effectively share His love with the world.  We were spurring each other on! How thankful I was for her!

My friends, God knows us from the inside out, He knows what we need and when we need it, if we will just heed His voice.  I had a choice when He spoke to me, to turn away and ignore His voice, or to follow His voice.

I couldn’t get away from His voice and I wanted to follow Him in obedience.

My sheep know My voice, and I know them and they follow me… John 10:27

Look what I would have missed had I chosen to walk the other way!

I will tell you that walking through this disease with my friend has had it’s hard moments.  Really hard moments.  I love her dearly and watching her walk through this is heart wrenching at times.  Though it may not have the ending I want, I am a better person for walking with her.  God has taught me so much about His gospel in the past 6 months through her.  I wouldn’t trade these times for anything.  I will hold on to these memories for the rest of my life. Oh to love like Jesus loves us!

I want to encourage you to heed His voice when He speaks to you.  There is great reward in following Christ wherever He leads.  He doesn’t promise us that the way will be easy, but He does promise to walk with us.  I am holding on to that promise today!

Oh the joy I would have missed had I not listened to the voice of God.

For months He has had this verse on my heart.  I’ve studied it , shared it with friends, and it seems God just keeps bringing it before me.

For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.  Isaiah 41:13

The past few weeks I have been clinging to that verse.  I had memorized it months ago when God first began to place it before me, not sure where He was going with it.

The past few weeks have been anything but great with my friend.  I’ve cried and asked God, “Why did ask me to do something so hard and now complicated?” He just continues to remind me, “I have you right where I want you, I am with you, DO NOT FEAR.”

I am on this journey, a rewarding journey hand in hand with my Lord.  I don’t know where it will lead in the end, possibly heartache for me.  But either way, the joy He has given me on this journey is worth it all.  The times my friend and I have shared will forever be some of my favorite times in life.

The one thing I can tell you is, I know I heard His voice all those months ago, and I’m thankful I listened to Him.  He knows the why’s.  He knows the end, all I need to do is follow Him.  There’s a song that says:

I don’t need to see the way ahead, I only need to hear the Shepherd’s Voice

Where is God asking you to go today that perhaps isn’t exactly the plan you had in mind? My friends, listen to His voice. I promise you He will walk with you where He is asking you to go, and the reward will be great!

Every person I share Psalm 118:24 with I always walk away from smiling, thinking of my precious friend, and how God has used her in the middle of Alzheimer’s to help me to become more intentional with the gospel of Christ.

Step out today in faith and say YES to the voice of God.  The road may be hard but the joy will be unspeakable!

My sheep know my voice, and I know them, and they follow me…

Have a great week!  See you back here really soon!

John 4:39

Somewhere On Your Knees

Woman-PrayingHello everyone! It has been a while since I’ve shared my heart in a blog post.  Well I’m back and we will be on our regular schedule from here out. (famous last words, huh??)

I hope everyone has had a great winter thus far.  We have had lots on snow on the ground here, it’s been beautiful, a winter wonderland! We went from snow to 60 degree weather! Weather in the south, you’ve got to love it!

My pastor has been focusing on prayer this month in his sermons.  This is the month of prayer for our church.  So I’ve spent some time focusing on prayer and using my prayer journal to talk to God about the things on my heart.

Last week I spent time fervently seeking God and listening for His voice in my prayer time.  That particular day God took my eyes to Colossians 4:12 where Epaphras is mentioned by Paul as a man who was wrestling in prayer for the church.  I’ve read this passage before but again God had me pause here.

Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you…Colossian 4:12

God began to place a dear friend on my heart for which I had been praying for some time.  But I heard God say, Wrestle in prayer for her. What was He saying to me? I mean I had been praying for her.  Was I not praying believing?

I began to study this passage and others.  In Genesis 32, Jacob wrestled with God.  Jacob was so fearful about seeing his estranged brother Esau, because Esau was bringing 400 men with him, and Jacob didn’t see this ending well.

Rather than God coming to him in a dream, He chose to come to Him in a wrestling match. This intense match where Jacob eventually realized he was wrestling with the Almighty God went on all night.  Finally God dislocates Jacob’s hip to end the match. Jacob says in intense pain, “I will not let you go unless you bless me” (Genesis 32:26).

His response clearly pleases God and God says He will bless Jacob.  Jacob limps away, hurting in body, but with the faith that when he faces Esau, God will be with him, and he has nothing to fear.

Wrestling in prayer is agonizing over the request with God.  Fervently praying over these requests.  Have there been times in your life where you’ve been on the floor praying and crying out to God?  I know I have.  It’s during these intense times of wrestling in prayer that I have felt God pour His greatest blessings on me.  When like Jacob I’ve gotten up limping, but my faith was increased.

God increased my faith as I wrestled in prayer

I began to wrestle in prayer this week for a dear friend, and I enlisted some of my prayer partners to pray with me.  As we wrestled in prayer for her, I’ve watched as God has not only moved in her situation, but He has increased my faith as well.  I’ve loved being able to tell the ladies I asked to pray with me of how my friend’s making progress.  So then their faith is increased.

Group of Women Praying

Perhaps you’re at a time in life where you don’t know what to do.  Perhaps God is calling you to wrestle in prayer.  When God calls us to wrestle with Him, there’s always more going on than we first understand and God always uses it to transform us for good.

Just as God pursed Jacob for the wrestling match, I know He pursed my heart to wrestle on behalf of my friend this week. The fear I felt when thinking about the wrestling match, dissipated as God poured greater faith and blessing on my life and the life of my friend during the wrestling.

When God calls us to wrestle with Him, there’s always more going on than we first understand and God always uses it to transform us for good.

If God is calling you to wrestle in prayer, it’s an invitation to a greater blessing He has for you.  You may not receive it the way you thought, but out of this intense time of prayer, you will receive blessings you never saw coming.  That is how great our God is.  He pursues us because He loves us.

It’s here I see God transforming me and my faith is growing in Him.  It is here in fighting in prayer for my friend that He is changing me.  It is here in the wrestling match that He is showing me , “Greater is He that is within me than he that is in the world.”  It is here He is teaching me to listen to His voice.  It is here that He reminds me of Romans 8:31, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” Then I began to sing that wonderful song, “What a powerful name it is, what a powerful name it is, the name of Jesus.”  Thank you Jesus!

Wrestling in prayer.  It’s a good place to be, so this is where I want to be, how about you?

See you next week and we will begin to talk about loving like Jesus loves.  I’m so excited to share with you all how God has been pursing my heart to love others like He loves me and what that looks like.  It’s been an exciting journey thus far.  I’m gearing up for some 4 week Bible studies, I hope you will do this with me.  Have a great weekend!
